About the Course

A combination of evidence-based lectures, small-group case discussions, and dissection on anatomical specimens guided by world-class faculty will be used to deliver the content to improve knowledge and skills in the key surgical techniques and in related care. Active engagement by all participants is critical to the effective delivery of this educational event.

Course Goal

Participants will learn the current management of trauma of the upper limb. Injuries from the sternoclavicular joint to the wrist including fractures, dislocations and soft-tissue injuries will be covered comprehensively. This will include the acute trauma phase and the posttraumatic sequelae such as malunion, nonunion, infection, etc. Exciting segments on upper limb arthroplasty, minimally-invasive fixation techniques for the humerus, 3D printing in upper extremity trauma and periprosthetic fractures will also be included.

Learning objectives

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Perform an appropriate assessment of the patient with trauma to the shoulder, humeral shaft, elbow, forearm and wrist
     

  • Discuss and explore the latest controversies in upper extremity trauma
     

  • Perform a thorough, stepwise analysis of the problem (what are the mechanical, biological, and soft tissue problems)
     

  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of the treatment options and decide with the patient which is best for their specific needs
     

  • Develop a comprehensive plan based on the needs of the patient, the injury, the patient factors, and the available surgical options
     

  • Complete the plan (perform operative procedures and nonoperative care)

Target Participants

Orthopedic and trauma surgeons with at least 3 years of experience who want to develop expertise in upper extremity fracture care or surgeons with many years of experience who want to update their knowledge.

 

Participants should also have completed the AO Trauma Course—Advanced Principles of Fracture Management.
